Physics and physical science departments at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) or community colleges can apply for a $1,000 grant to bring guest speakers to their institution for colloquium or seminar presentations. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain exposure to the breadth of physics research. Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis.

Requirements

APS Guest Speaker Grant for MSIs

The APS Committee on Minorities (COM) will be providing support in the form of travel grants of up to $1000 per institution per year to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to enable these institutions to host speakers for colloquium or seminar presentations. The aim of these travel grants is to provide opportunities for both the speaker, to disseminate her/his research, as well as for the institution, to bring in talented scientists. The visit should also stimulate undergraduate interest and engagement at the institution. Preference will be given to underrepresented minority speakers as well as to speakers visiting multiple institutions in a region.

Eligibility extends to physics and physical science departments of minority-serving institutions and community colleges. Canadian and Mexican colleges & universities are also eligible to apply, provided that the speakers they invite are currently employed by U.S. institutions.

APS COM requests that interested institutions provide the following when requesting travel grants:

  • CV of the Speaker
  • Title of Talk
  • A few sentences on the benefits to the department
  • Estimated list of expenses (allowed expenses include transportation, lodging, and honaria)
